Treatment of brain cancer and spinal cord cancer

The tumors of central nervous system can be benign and malignant which affect brain and spinal cord. The tumors of central nervous system are primary and secondary.

● The primary tumors of central nervous system develop from neurons, glial cells, endothelial vascular cells, cells which form meninx, or stem cells because of their mutation.
● The secondary tumors of central nervous system are formed because of metastasing of cancer cells from other organs and tissues, affected by cancer, by means of blood circulatory system. Cancer cells can also penetrate central nervous system from neighboring organs and tissues affected by cancer.

As of today the exact reasons of occurrence of primary tumor of central nervous system are unknown. Depending on the degree of tumor malignance and the place of its location in central nervous system the course of disease will depend.

The diagnostics of tumors of central nervous system is carried out by using roentgen and magnetic resonance imaging with the internal contrast intensifying. With the purpose of diagnosis clarification biopsy with the subsequent morphological examination with the purpose of establishing its malignance degree can be used in some cases.

The treatment of tumors of central nervous system depends on the degree of its malignance, prevalence and localization. The main methods of treatment of tumor of central nervous system are the surgical method, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. If a tumor of central nervous system has small sizes, then it is possible to use stereotactic radiosurgery, whose essence consists in high-precision feeding of large doses of ionizing radiation to tumor cells with the purpose of their full destruction.
